.oi.EOItAI’II —PER ASSOCIATION] A FATAL ENDING. OTAKI, June 21 , Miss Joplin, the victim of the motor car accident at Otaki Gorge on Sunday, died to-day without regaining consciousness. AT NIUE ISLAND. AUCKLAND, This Day. News by the Tofua states that H.M.S. Veronica arrived at Niue Island on May 14th. It was expected that two natives arrested in connection with the murder of a native policeman would be hanged. Apparently the Veronica arrived the day after-the'Tutanekai left. A. AND P. SHOW. PALMERSTON N., June 21. The Manawatu A. and P. Association's 19th National dairy show opened to-day in showery weather. There was a large comprehensive display. The entries total 3007, against 2942 last year. JOCKEYS SUED. AUCKLAND, June 21 At the Magistrate’s Court, the N.Z. Jockeys Association claimed from Jour jockeys—A. J. McFlynn, L. G. Morris, B. H. Morris and R. Hitch, sums ranging from £35 16s 9d to £7 10s 6d, subscriptions and percentages of riding moneys earned during the last six months. Defendants claimed they were absolved fro!m liability because each had given notice of his resignation from the Association six months previously, but at the time of the expiration of the six months’ notice, they had not paid the amounts of subscriptions due on the date of resignations. It was stated by counsel for defendants that they had advised them that such moneys not having been paid, their resignations had become negative. The cases were therefore adjourned so that the claim in each case may be paid.
THEFT GF MEAT. HAMILTON, June 21. Martin Joyce and John William McCorkindale pleaded guilty to breaking into jj. butcher shop and stealing meat. .Joyce was placed on probation for two years and McCorkindale for three year’s reformative .treatment. MURDER TRIAL. HAMILTON, June 21 i The trial of Hakaia Te Kahu for the murder of Richard Elliott at Ongaroto commences this afternoon and is expert ed to last several days.
