T houghts For The Times
What is Democracy ? ■ “What is democracy?” asked Profes- ' sor Salmond in a recent lecture. They ! could not do better than take Lincoln’s definition —“Government of the people, by the people, for the people.” The postulate from which democracy started was that men were equal. It was only partly true. The profound ethical truth at the basis of democracy i was not ‘J am as good as you are,” but ‘‘You are as good as I am,” and if it were fully and generally carried into practice our social evils would vanish.”
