At a conference held at Greymouth on Saturday of representatives of the West Coast Union, and InangahUa and Westland Sub-Unions, it was agreed to. approve of the proposal of the appointment of a selector from the two SubUnions to act with the Union selection committee. Mr M. Houston was nominated for appointment as the Westland representative.
Last week Mrs Sfaveley organised a concert party of ladies and gentlemen who paid a visit to the Mental Hospital and gave an evening’s entertainment in the recreation halL The various songs, choruses and dances were much enjoyed, the event being a bright interesting one for the inmates. Subsequently the visiting performers were entertained at supper at th e Superintendent’s house by Dr and Mrs Buchanan, It is understood other concerts will be organised from time to time for the entertainment of the patients, and no doubt they will be equally acceptable to all concerned.
Mr Joseph Scobel, an old resident of Brunner, passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 73 years. Deceased was a native of Cornwall and an experienced miner. He came 35 years ago to Brunner, where for a quarter of a century lie was connected with Brimned Mine, retiring about ten ye r- : ago. He was a man of very estimable chaiacter, and numerous friends will regret to hear of bis death. He is survired by a widow and three daughters, viz., Mesdames F. Glen (Taylorvillei, Dando (Tavlorville), and B. Bussell i Greymouth).

The Resident Engineer (Mr Gillies) has advised the Westland County Council that authority is being issued by the Public Works Department to undertake the more urgent repairs to the Kanieri bridge. We regret to record the death of Dir Henry Jones, the well known foreman of the goods sheds at the Government Railways, Wellington, which took place on Monday last.
