New Zealand’s Factories
HON. 10. P. LEE’S TRIBUTE. DUNEDIN, June 10. Speaking at a. social function tendered him by tho Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association, the Hon E. P. Lee, Minister of Industries and Commerce, said lie had seen manufacturing concerns of the kind in other countries in the Old Hand and in Canada, and he had tho opportunity last week of visiting them in Christchurch, so ho was able to gather a great deal of information by reason of those visits. There seemed to bo here, as in Christchurch, an honest endeavour on behalf of those concerned in the conduct of those industries to carry them out on up-to-date principles, and to turn out a first-class article. The Minister supplemented his remarks by stating that it would bo a splendid idea to arrange, for groups of scholars of the higher standards of some of our schools to visit the factories of our principal industries. Tn his opinion no bettor lesson could he given to tho hoys and girls. “I am more than pleased at the extent of the expansion of the factories of the industries I have had an opportunity of seeing during the last two days I have been in Dunedin,” said the Hon E. P. Lee to a reporter on Thursday evening, “Dunedin, like Christchurch, has always had a reputation of being a manufacturing centre, but I am sure the people do not recognise the growth of the factories of these two cities during recent times. It seems to me that the factories T visited to-day are making articles which the public of the Do- . minion do not know are being made in | their own country. The workmanship j of our artisans is excellent, and is do- i serving of every commendation and j support from the public.”
