AMNESTY PROCLAIMED

Government has proclaimed a general amnesty of political offenders in Mesopotamia, both to those concerned in the 1920 rising and prior, with the exception of nineteen persons who were implicated in the murder of officers and officials, and who at present are fugitives from justice.

THE ROMAN QUESTION

The “Messagero” in an article advocating the reopening of the Roman question is attracting much attention. The “Corrielle D’ltalia” commenting on the significant change of policy from anti-clerica 1 ism to close accord with the Vatican states this means recognition of the international influence which official Italy ignored until the war opened every one’s eyes.
In the second round of the women’s golf championship Miss Leitch beat Miss Hollins (America) one up; Molly Griffiths won her match. THE COMING CONFERENCE. (Received This Day at 1.5. p.m,)* LONDON, May 31. Mr Hughes is taking over the duties of High Commissioner on the 11th. Mr Massey questioned Hon \V. Churchill regarding the distinctive title of the Conference and expressed a personal preference for an Imperial Cabinet, following 'the precedent of the Imperial War Cabinet. Hon W. Churchill proposed the conference should determine its own designation. Mr Lloyd George concurs.

Herbert Smith states Lloyd George never made any threat of compulsory arbitration, hut in a casual talk said Government could seek power to pass laws to deal with compulsory arbitration. ANOTHER AMBUSH. (Received this dav at 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 31. A party of Hant's Regiment with their bund were ambushed near \oughnl. Five or six of them were killed and nearly a dozen wounded by bombs or the mined road. Several arrests have been made. BAVARIA’S ATTITUDE. ■Received tbri dav at 1.30 pm), k BERLIN, May 31. Although the Central Government has furnished Nollett with a disbanding list, a final agreement with Bavaria, is apparently still outstanding, although an agreement is anticipated.
