INSPECTOR’S REPORT.
Re complaint of alleged nuisance in Sewell Street —In company with the Chairman of Public Works, I inspected the locality on Tuesday 10th., and found the same to he surface water only in a hollow between the road and a private section. On the date mentioned it was found to he quite sanitary and to fill the hollow would mean the flooding of the above mentioned section during wet weather. If however, rE becomes stagnant it could easily he drained to the Sewell Street drain. The Health Inspector on the same date made an inspection of same jind could see nothing offensive. Water supply—On Friday the 13th.. I found the reservoir to contain one foot of water, equal to over 23,000 gallons. On the night of the 15th., I left the suthern portion of the town on at 60lbs. pressure and eased the northern portion down to a minimum. This gave the consumers north of Hampden street, and within the Borough only that supply for Hie night. On visiting the reservoir at 2 p.m. the following day I found the water had risen to 5 feet, or over 118,000 callous. I have since adopted this method of regulation and find an improvement in the reserve.
On Tuesday the 17th during ny presence at the reservoir and during a test which showed a very slight improvement the line gave way behind the Kanieii township. The water was immediately stopped from running hack and during the first six hours no less than 70,000 gallons passed through the reservoir. However, over night we were able to maintain a reserve of 48,000 gallons. The line was restored the next morning and to date the quantity of water in the reservoir was as follows.
Friday 13th. 1 foot; Monday 16th. 5 feet; Tuesday 17th., 4ft. 9in.; Friday 20th., 2ft. 6in. (after break); Sunday 22nd. 3 ft.; Monday 23rd. sft.; Wednesday 25th. 4ft.; Friday 2-7tli 4ft.; —Received. OVERSEER’S REPORT.
I beg to submit the following report on works during the past- month: - The water, service has occupied a good part of the time, in consequence the Hal! Street drain has not had as time worked in it as I expected. M e are now about 1 chain off Park Street, with the pipes, 2 chains more will finish it across Park Street clear of the road. During the month we had two bad breaks in the pipe line between the Reservoir and Kanieri Forks, one at Tuckers Flat required 25 feet of new pipes to repair it, the wire had rusted through and the pressure opened up the staves. Beyond Stribling’s Creek the collars of two pipes blew out, and were renewed again. At McKay’s creek bridge and Kanieri Forks Bridge, two more collars blew out. The main in Rolleston Street hurst on the 12tli. of the month the same day as the line on the Lake road. Wc inspected part of line, putting a grating over the intake at Lake Kanieri on May 19tli.
The town service has boon giving a lot of trouble on the 16th. re repaired 10 leaks. During the month we made about ,2J-i chains of concrete pipes. The usual town cleaning lias been attended to. The County Council took delivery of 3 feet moulds to-day. —Received. The Council rose at 9.15 p.m.
