j The Council met at 7.45 p.m. PreI sent—Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), J. King, A. G. Pilkington, G. H. Blank, R. F. Perham, A. Parkhill, F. McGregor, J. Lloyd. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., notifying Hon J. Anderson, Minister of Mines approaching visit to Hokitika.—Received. From Officer of Healtli Department, notifying requirements under the Health Act.—Received ; to be attended to.
From Westland Hospital Board, notifying amended levy for the year, Hie Council’s quota being £921 14s 6d.—Re-
ceived. .Mr Blank said the Board had reduced the levy as low as was possible. Mr Coulson said it would he of no use reducing the levy unless the expenditure was also reduced. " In reference to the statement that the levy was to he paid in nine instalments, -Mr Blank said this would he rescinded at next meeting. It was through the action of the Borough Council that this was inserted, as the Council line! paid up four instalments at once to save interest, while the Board had to pay the interest instead. From Hon H. L. Michel, thanking Council for reappointment to Hokitika Fire Board.—Received. From R. Goudie, drawing attention to blackberries on reserve at hack of his section, and asking they be cleared.— Received; referred to Chairman of Reserves Committee with power to act. From Westland branch of Canterbury Automobile Association, covering letter from Railway Department in reference to tlie request for turnouts on Hokitika river bridge and stating the cost would have to he borne by the Hokitika Borough and Westland County Councils.— Received. Mr Perham pointed out the increase of traffic and said lie was of opinion that the time was approaching when the turnouts would he a necessity. Mr Perry said the Council had unsuccessfully urged the erection of turnouts when the bridge was being built. During a discussion that followed, a reference was made to the closing .of Knnieri bridge, Mr McGregor moving that the Government he urged to at once repair the structure. —Seconded by Mr King, and after further discussion agreed to. From Milton Borough Council, quoting prices for supply of wood pipes and from John Chambers and Sons, Wellington, to the same effect.—Received and tiled for reference. From Hokitika Fire Brigade, stating a number of fire plugs arc difficult to locate and a number of the location signs are missing and asking for atten-tion.--Received ; referred to Overseer for immediate attention. From Westland County Council, accepting offer for supply of moulds.—Received.
From Charles Jones, asking to he relieved of service with the Council.—Received. Mr Coulson moved that the Council greatly regrets the necessity for the step.—Seconded by Mr Lloyd and agreed to. From D. P: Stuart, asking for a light to he placed at intersection of Stafford and Jollie Streets.—Received ; consideration deferred until after the electric light was installed. From Director of Ordnance Services, forwarding war trophies.—Received. From Westland Chamber of Commerce, asking for contribution to the Otira motor service.—Received. Mr King moved that the sum of 615 he voted as previously agreed to. —Seconded hv Mr Coulson and carried, Mr Blank
dissenting. From Wataroa Cemetery Trustees, asking for information.—Received ; already supplied. From -Chief Inspector of Explosives, circular. —Received ; referred to Mayor
to attend to. From Mrs S. A. Fowler, asking for crossing into her residence.—Received; request granted on usual conditions. From L. Michel, applying for use of Town Mall on Monday next for dance. — Received ; request granted subject to approval of Town Band. From Westland Caledonian Society, applying for use of Town Hall foT concert in aid of Beautifying Society.— Received and request granted. From Hokitika Beautifying Association, supplying designs for beautifying Cass Square for the information of the Council —Received ; referred to Reserves Committee for report. REPORTS. From Treasurer, reporting receipts £75 6s Id, payments £l9B 4s, debit balance £377 10s 6d.—Received. The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £l27.—Received and adopted. The Public Works Committee reported :
At a meeting of the Public Works Committee held on the 25th, idem., it was decided to make the following recommendations : (lyße Mrs W. Groufsky’s request to have water-hole in the vicinity of her propeity, Sewell Street, filled in. Your Committee beg to recommend that no action he taken at present as in the opinions of both Mr Varney, Health Inspector, and Mr Gibbons, Borough Inipector, the water-hole is not at all insn nitary. (2) Re planking W. _ Jones section, Stafford Street. This requires to be renewed in places and your Committee recommends that authority he given to have the work carried out. (3) Re Hall Street drain. Three chains of piping and six chains of open ditching will complete this work and your Committee recommend that authority he given to put on two extra men to expedite its’s completion. Cl) As there are several had pot holes in different parts of the Borough your Committee ask for authority to put on a horse, dray and man to have these
necessary repairs carried out. (5) After very careful consideration your Committee recommend that the Council procure a horse and dray of their own. The first four clauses were agreed to without discussion. On the last clause a long discussion took place, members generally favoring the proposal, but the question of finance entered considerably into the discussion and ultimately consideration of this clause was deferred 'for a month. The report amended was then adopted.
