A New Pass.
WELLINGTON, May 12
The general manager of tho Department of Tourist and Health Resorts has received advice of the discovery by Messrs John Edgar and T. Johnstone of another pass on the To Anau-Waka-tipu overland track into the Eglington Valley. Mr Edgar is a private guide at Queenstown and has reported as follows :
“On March 10th last, Mr T. Johnstone and myself left Glade House with the object of finding a lower pass into the Eglington on the Lake Te AnauWakatipu overland track. After walking for about three hours at a gradual grade up the Glade Burn, wo came to a pass which registered by an aneroid 3850 feet above sea level, which is 750 feet lower than the pass Wo have been using. We descended 1300 feet into the head of Hut Creek and followed the stream down a fine valley of about 31 miles, where wo struck the Eglington, which is 1250 feet above sea level. There was an old blazed trail, which looked about thirty years old on the last mile or so. Evidently some one had tried to go through this way. We onlno out at about four miles ahead of the old camp, thus shortening the longest stage and lengthening the shortest. This itself is a great advantage. No doubt this would he the best way through, on account of the easy grade, and horses could he used. It also runs through some good grazing country. I am almost sure this is the lowest pass on the Dnrron range.
