NEW YORK, May 6

The Secretary of Labour, Mr Davis, is strenuously endeavouring to effect ,i compromise between the shipping owners and the unionists. ’ Violence has broken out at New York and Savannah. There was a melee at New York between strikers and nonunionists. Several shots were fired. One sailor was wounded.

At Savannah some strikers fired on shipping hoard officials, who were arranging a place of crew of strike breakers outboard a vessel. There were no casualties.

The Shippinag Board announces its vessels are clearing from New \ ork, with a minimum delay.

The striking engineers have set up a counter claim.

There are 434 ships tied up at this port.
