The Federal Director of Immigration states that providing conditions remain favourable Australia will attract 15,000 to 20,000 immigrants this year and 50,000 next year. THE FLAG INCIDENT. (Received This Day at 9.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 6. The storm of indignation against the Domain flag burning continues. The newspapers publish columns of protest. Rig loyalist demonstrations are arranged for to-night and Sunday. The Labour Council resolved that the burning of tlie flag was a provocative act, intended to discredit May Day proceedings and was engineered by a few fanatics with the object of driving tlie wedge of dissention in the ranks of the working class. THE DEFENCE BILL. MELBOURNE, May 6. The Defence Bill is having a troubled passage through the Senate. The chief objection which is strongly voiced by a number of returned soldier Senators, is to tlie application of the British Army Act to the Commonwealth in peace time. In viejv of the strong hostility, Government withdrew this clause of the bill. TAXPAYERS PROTEST. (Received This Day at 9.45 a.m.) PORT DARWIN, May 6. The Taxation Department has issued many summonses for tlie recovery' of taxes.
