May Day was celebrated by a big procession of unionists through the streets, beaded by a red flag, with the singing of revolutionary songs to tbe domain, where a monster demonstration was held. Fervid speeches of an anti-capi-talistic and revolutionary character were delivered from platforms where red Hags were flown. Serious trouble was threatened at one stage Alien poiti,m of a Union Jack placed on a pole, was burned. A small body of soldiers attempted to rush the platform and capture the flag. Some hot scrimmaging followed. The soldiers were prevented carrying out their object. An announcement was made that it was intended tlic May Day demonstration m future should take the place of the eight hour celebration.
In the evening a lively Socialist meeting was held in the Town Hall. The speakers denounced the British Empire. Some expressed pleasure at the Union Jack incident in the domain.

Archbishop Clung referring to lion Lloyd George’s statement in the Commons, cabled on the 28th, said Hon Llovd George had not denied or impugned the accuracy of his statements.
