TELEPHONE EXTENSION. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2
A new telephone service, linking up Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson was formally inaugurated yesterday in the superintendent’s office, Hereford street. A little group of public men and departmental officials conversed first with a similar group at Blenheim, 220 miles away, and then with another group at Nelson nearly 300 miles distant. The exchange of greeting and congratulations were carried on without the slightest hitch. Every word was heard distinctly. The service was opened liy the Christchurch Town Clerk speaking to the Mayor of Blenheim. FISHERMAN DROWNED. WELLINGTON, May 2 John Jack, f fisherman, aged 58, when returning to Island Bay with two companions after a day’s fishing, was lost overboard and drowned. The body was not recovered. Deceased was a native of Shetland Islands and lnul no relatives in New Zealand.
FLY WHEEL BURSTS
AUCKLAND, May 2
At the Brick and Tile Coy. works at Avondale while work was in full swing, a fly wheel of about ten tuns, burst. The main fly wheel of twelve feet diameter, followed. One end of the building was wrecked. No one was injured.
CHOKED TO DEATH
AUCKLAND, May 2
The body of T). McDade, a greaser off tbe steamer Matatua, was found in a vacant lot in the town. A post mortem showed a piece of meat had lodged in bis throat and death was probably due to choking.

A LABOR RESOLUTION. AUCKLAND, May 2
A labour meeting in the Opera House on Sunday evening was addressed by I .Mr Holland, M.P., and carried unanimously a resolution moved by Mr Parry, condemning Government’s censorship of j certain literature, and urging an united j working class effort to secure the release of Frederick Johnson, r imprisonment for a breach of repressive laws and recommending works to.resort to every legitimate means to secure a repeal of the law.
