—— <►♦«> [PEK PEEBS ABSOCIATJON.—OOPYHIGHT. ONGAROTO MURDER. (ROTORUA, April 29. The Court proceedings at the inquest on the Ongaroto murder concluded this afternoon. The jury returned a verdict that Patrick Richard Elliott died of a gun-shot wound in the back of the neck on or about March 27t1i., and lie was wilfully murdered; and a strong suspicion rests upon Hakarara Tekahu as the murderer. The accused reseived his defence. He was committed for trial at Hamilton on June 14th. The Alagistrate highly complimented those searching for Elliott on the way that they had worked under considerable difficulties and handicaps. TRADE AVITH GERMANY. FEILDING, April 29. A meeting of farmers here to-day, held under the Union auspices, decided to set up a commission to discuss the possibility of bartering wool with Germany in exchange for manures. A HUSBAND’S RIGHTS. WELLINGTON, April 29. Tn the Supreme Court ease, before Mr Justice Reed, the question of a husband’s rights was determined. His Honour found that Barber (plaintiff) was married in 1879 and that the furniture which his wife then possessed became by virtue of law then in "‘force the property of her husband. AVhnt small amount of this which remained was not claimed by Barber. Furthermore Mrs Barber had no resources out of which she could purchase furniture. His Honour held that the evidence showed that Barber had frem time to time purchased furniture, claimed by him, out of his own money, that lie had not made a gift of the furniture to his wife. Although the furniture was in the family home at his wife’s death it still belonged to the husband. Judgment was given accordingly in plaintiff’s favour as against the executors for the possession of furniture claimed with costs and exnenses. HOSPITAL REACTS. PALMERSTON N , April 29. A conference of contributing bodies was held at Palmerston Nodi to discuss a proposed increase f Hospital Board levies and a reduced Government subsidy. It was considered at present that the system of taxation is unreasonable. It was stated Ponanginn County last year paid a £B7O levy and had three patients in the hospital averaging £290 each patient. A resolution was canned: “That this meeting of local bodies outer an emphatic protest to the Commission in regard to the proposed rate of subsidies to be paid Hospital Boards within this district, which will mean a reduction to 12s 3d in the £; and, further that this meeting is of opinion that all Hospital Boards should be treated alike, and that a subsidy of £ for £ should be paid, as the present system means increased subsidies for some hospitals at the expense of others.” HOSPITAL REFORAIS. MASTERTON, April 29. An interesting scheme ws put forward at the Wairarapa Hospital Board meeting to-day by Dr. Dawson. Alcdical Superintendent of Pahiatua, with reference to the introduction of the Tornionto system in the public hospital. Under this system hospitals are fitted in addition to ordinary wards, with small private wards for patients prepared to pay for the privilege. Extra wards are also privided for the use of indigent maternity cases. The HealU' Department approves of ;r,e scheme, and if successful it may be extended to other parts of the Dominion. The scheme has been in successful operation in Canada for many years past. The proposal was postponed at the suggestion of the Pahiatua delegates until the Hospital Commission’s report is brought down.
