MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

AT HOKITIKA. The polling yesterday for nine Councillors and the informal poll on the {. question of a loan of £6OOO for a Town : Tlall caused considerable interest, espee- ( ially as the afternoon wore on, and the vicinity of the Town Hall wore quite an animated appearance. The poll j closed at 7 p.m. and after 9 o’clock ! there was a large gathering to hear J tho result. The crowd increased until j by 9.45 p.m. when the doors were thrown open there were, enough people present to fill the Town Hall. Mr A. Andrewes (Returning Officer) then announced the provisional result of the poll as follows: — BOROIIGII COIJNOIL. (Nine seats). John Uloyd “5 H. M. Coulson 489 R. F. Perham 439 F. McGregor A. G. THE SPEECHES. Mr Lloyd on mounting the platiorm was received with applause, each fol--1 lowing speaker also being heartily received. Mr Lloyd thanked the electors J sincerely for tho great support acoord- | ed him. The result was beyond his an--1 ticipations. He assured them he was \ not bound to any party and his one I effort would be to watch the best interests of tho town. | Mr Coulson thanked them sincerely i for their continued support and eonfi- _ donee. In tho future as in the past he 1 would endeavour to merit their eon- | fideuce and he hoped they would never g regret voting for him. He thought the 1 defeated candidates by coming forward I and offering their services had done i their best and lie asked them to join 1 in three cheers for those unsuccessful, i Mr R. I'\ Perham desired to ack- | nowledge his thanks for the generous 1 support accorded. Ho thought the sell lection made showed the good sense of | the electors. As one lady had said | that afternoon, there ought to lit? an " election every day because she had | never seen so many smiling faces about 9 the streets before. He thanked them ™ heartily and would do his best in the | interests of the Borough. He hoped to ■ render some assistance. The past Council had been working under adverse - circumstances and it was up to the new ) one t'o make good,

Mr F. McGregor thanked them heartily for returning him again to the Council, lie regretted Messrs Breeze and Thompson had not ollered themselves again, as they had proved good councillors. He was one who had not voted for the loan that day, as he considered there were more urgent requirements in the town. J heir first eonsidoration should be the improvement of the water supply and the earning out of other permanent improvements.

Mi- A. G. Pilkington tendered bis sincere thanks for the honour conferred of electing him to a seat on the Council at the first time of asking. He would do fiis best in the interests of the town. He was glad to see the interest taken in tho election and hoped it would continue and grow. lie would do his bit to help the town to move along with the times.

Mr G. A. Wood thanked those who supported him. It was gratifying to him to know that his services had been appreciated, and lie would do his best to carry on the good work. Mr A. Parkhill in thanking the electors for Lis re-election said the late Council had no money to do what was required. The first matter requiring attention was the water supply. The people do not realise what a. very fine deal was made in securing the electric light for the town. The Hall Street drain had been nearly completed. Those wore? two works that reflected to the credit of tho last Council. Mr'G. If. Blank thanked the electors for their support. He always tried to do his best without fear or favor and perhaps that was the reason that he stood in his present position. He thanked thorn for their support.

Mr E. C. Tooliey thanked those who had .supported him. He was not disappointed and would stand again on a future occasion. He congratulated the ratepayers on the excellent Council selected. On some future occasion he hoped to meet with more support. Mr N. Warren thanked those who had voted for him. He was not disappointed as he recognised the result was the free choice of the people, who apparently did not approve of his past actions. He may possibly come forward at a future occasion. Ho congratulated the electors on the selection made.

Mr tV. Johnson, thanked them for their votes, but thought as soldiers they would have got better support. He hoped they would get a better hearing next time.

Mr C. P. Sellers hanked all his supporters. In the little war they got reverses. but came again. The electors had made a wise ohoico and he trusted that the selection mado will prove advantageous to the town. Mr A. W. Feddersen thanked his supporters. He was not downhearted though at the wrong end of the list. He would at all times do his best to assist the progress and advancement of the town. He moved a vote of thanks to the Tic turning Officer for presiding.

For the Hospital Board, first preference the lending candidates are : Rev Archer, Mrs Herbert, and Dr Fenwick. CITY COUNCIL. Owing to the proportional representation system it will he some time before the final results are known. The quota was 826, and on the first preference votes the polling was: D. G.. WELLINGTON MAYORALTY. The voting for the Wellington Mayoralty, with four returns to come is as follows: — R. A. Wright 13,231 p (Labour) 6,824 BLENHEIM MAYORALTY. Tn the Mayoralty election Mr Parker polled 971 against Mr Cooke’s 837. BLENHEIM HALF-HOLIDAY. At the half-holiday poll the voting was: Saturday, 1085; Wednesday, 718. INVERCARGILL MAYORALTY. The Mayoral election resulted in the election of J. E. Lillicrap, 2243; J. Stead, the retiring Mayor, polling 1380. For South Invercargill, W. McChesney polled 454 against R, Brown’s 435. LYTTELTON. For the Mayoralty, Lester, .the retiring Mayor, polled 746; J. T. Norton, 358 votes.

AT MASTERTON. I Tho Mayoral election resulted:— O. N. C. Pragnell 1714 W. Candy 4839 Saturday half-holiday was carried by 395 of a mojority. an A Borough drainage loan proposal, sh totalling £29,000 was carried by a ma- hr jority of 847. For Gisborne Mayoralty George Wild I ish (retiring Mayor) polled 1879; G. C. Munns, 528; and I. Mirfield 349. j WOOLSTON. The Woolston Mayoralty was captured by White, 480; Hill, the retiring Mayor, polling 461. OAMARU RESULTS. Mr J. McDiamid was re-elected Mayor unopposed. Five members of the old Council were defeated. Seven out of nine of the Citizens’ ticket were returned.
