PROPOSES COMPULSORY UNIONISM. WELLINGTON. April 20. A request by the New Zealand Educational Institute that the Board should collect members’ subscriptions •was considered by the Wellington Education Board to-day. The chairman Mr Forsyth said that this was impossible. There was a little irony in the position, one of the institute planks was abolition of education boards yet the instituto wished the Board to do this vital part of its work for it. Mr MacCallum M.P. objected that the Board did not pay the teachers salaries. The Chairman : No, hut it can be arranged with the Department. Mr Grundy remarked that the Board collected the subscriptions, and it should be open to a suspicion that it would be compelling the teachers to join the institute. He moved that the request be declined. The chairman seconded the motion stating that a similar request previously made was rejected by the Board. Mr London saw no objection to collecting the subscriptions on a business basis. Mr Moss observed that it was a wonder that teacher professing to be anxious to raise the status of the profession, did not show more loyalty in the institute than was indicated by the request. The request was declined.
