CONCERN IN WELLINGTON

WELLINGTON, April 9
Unemployment is commencing to make itself evident in Wellington, with ti c result that city members are apcaching the PHrnc .Minister with n request to relieve the position by meal pftblic works. The Gnt.a! .uogiess League, to ascertain the real extent of unemployment, proposes to advertise, hjviting all men out of work to appL to the league, giving particulars It anticipates taht a large number will respond. The League’s next move will be to advocate the prompting starting of works for which the city has long been waiting, including the extension of reclamation, and improvement of arterial roads outside the city.
Mr G. Mitchell, member for Wellington South, has received a telegram from 19 Auckland soldiers, stating that they are unable to get employment after trying all official agencies. The Progress League’s policy is to force on the Government plan, of starting urgent works in the deptn of winter, as it is well known that the Minister of Public Works has recently curtailed expenditure so as to la « money in hand for this purpose n hen it might he urgently needed.
