In connexion with the woolly aphis pest. Professor Easterfield, Director of the Hawthorn Institute of Scientific Research, has announced that Dr ’fillyard obtained a number of insects from America which feed on the aphis. On Saturday afternoon it had been first noted that a number had hatched cut, and that the trees at the Institute on which the experiment had been made were being rapidly cleared of the iphis. If the insects became properly established. .they would greatly reduce the aphis trouble throughout New Zealand. There was no change of th-> insects attacking the trees after they bad eaten all the aphis.

Ministers have returned to Wellington and a full Cabinet is available for the purpose of considering matters of importance to bo decided prior to the departure of tho Prime Minister for England. WELLINGTON, April -3. A lire attended by fatal results occurred in Alma lane Wellington tonight. When the brigade responded to the call it was found the interior of a four roomed house was burning. Rules are being drafted and machinery work undertaken. CARPENTERS WORK. WELLINGTON. This Day. An official of the local Society of Carpenters and Joiners states there is still plenty of work obtainable in the city at 3s per hour. Not sufficient men are offering to fill jobs at these rates, and there is abundant work in the country. The Guild system is not vet in operation, but steps for its formation area rushing ahead.

THE COAL SUPPLY. WELLINGTON, April G. New Zealand has been obtaining very free supplies of Newcastle coal. As a result the coal position generally is much easier. Heavy importations of coal have been made by the Railway Department which is estimated to now have three n>r four months supply of coal on hand. Inquiries show there has been a tightening up of the export at the Newcastle. Vessels awaiting coal cargoes for New Zealand are being subjected to the unfortunate delays. Apparently Australia has decided to replenish its own depleted stocks before paying c: tent ion to the needs of other cone It will be another three months before regular shipments will be renewed. Altogether the Newcastle position is very uncertain. THE WOOL VENDORS. WELLINGTON, April 5. New Zealand will be represented in the scheme of the British Australian wool realisation association. Air A. E. Mnlin of Levin and Co., Wellington, will leave on Thursday for Melbourne as representative of the wool interest: of the Dominion. He will present the N.Z. case in regard to realisation of wool, as follows: That negotiations undertaken with the British Government and the British Australian wool real l sation association and "AVool Importers Association of London shall provide for a limitation of otfeiings in England and Australasia and efforts he continued to secure rtopresetiitatioii on the RrilK Australasian wool realisation associat ion.

In the meantime all wool sales scheduled to be held in the Dominion will be cancelled. Some buyers have reguar ly attended N.Z sales for years past, and practically made their homes in New Zealand. They are leaving for London shortly.

The prohibition of private sales of wool was proposed at the recent conference of producers. It is still under consideration, but the brokers have definitely suspended all auction ‘ales.
