HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

THURSDAY, MARCH 24th.* Tho Council met at 7.55 p.in. Pro sent Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor). Coulson, Wood, Breeze, Warren, McGregor and King. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Westland branch of Canterbury Autombile Association asking support to request to Railway Department to have two additional turnouts on Hokitika. Railway bridge—Received, Mr Coulson moved that the Council support the proposal and appoint the Mayor, Messrs Coulson and King toconfei- with the Association as to the best means of securing their desire.—I Agreed to. j From E. W. Heenan, secretary Westi land Rugby sub-union, asking for Cass Square to bo put in order and for permission to erect a temporary wire around the playing field. —Received and request acceded to. From Hokitika Beautifying Association asking that '.steps be .taken to , prevent tho deposit of rubbish on the beach, and suggesting tho erection of , turnstiles, towards the cost of which ! Mrs Butler offered to supply a donation of timber.—Received. Members agreed on tli c > necessity of keeping the beach in better order. Mr Breeze said there was no place for the deposit of rubbish. He thought the Inspector was to report on a suitable depot. Before they thought of putting up gates, the Council should find a, rubbish depot. Mr McGregor favoured putting up gates. The Mayor was against this course, as it was the duty of the Council to prevent people depositing rub-

bisli on the bench. Mr Warren favoured tlio erection of gates as the only means of stopping the deposit, if the Council had power to do so. The motion for support to the request was then agreed to. From same submitting report of the vice-Cliairman in connection with the suggested improvement of Cass Square.

Received. A deputation consisting of Mossr Evans and Niven, representing the re centy formed Beautifying Associatioi waited on the Council in conneetiol with proposed improvement of Cass Square! Various matters were discuss, ed. the Council promising every possible support, the Reserves Committee to confer with the Beautifying Association ;is the means of carrying out the proposed improvements. A discussion followed on various matters including: the host means of improving the eastern part of the centre of the square, and proposed improvement around the Square, a satisfactory agreement as to the course to he pursued being reached. From J. R. iUillner. thanking Council for appointment as Overseer. Received. From Public Trust Department, Wellington in response to payment of income tax on debentures. Received From Dowell Bros asking for cancellation of lease of reserve, Howitt’s Square.—Received; request granted. REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts. £704 9s Kkl; payments, £234 18s Od; credit balance, £2O 7s Od. Received From Finance Committee recommending payment of accounts amounting to £743 Os Od; and recommending renewal of sanitary contract for another 12 months. Received and adopted. Ah Ale Gregor moved that die Over seer lie instructed to have the Hall Street drain completed without delay. Seconded by Mr King and carried. Mr Woods moved:— ‘That an informal poll of the rat*'"up - rre be ta eii on the date fixed 1 . the election of Mayor and Council on j the following proposals viz:— | (a) To borrow the sum of £6,000 for j the purpose of erecting a new Town , Hall and Municipal Chambers. Mr Wo. :1s stated a new Town Hall properly d< -ignod would earn more than than would pay for its cost of upkeep and interest on the loan. He thought the ratepayers should have die opportunity of saying whether they ipprovod of the proposal. Seconded by Ur King who favored the proposal and loped the ratepayers would have the ipportunity of deciding the question.
