THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT
AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. PROPOSED REFORM. LONODN, March 22. The House of Lords accepted a mbtion by Lord Selborne urging the Government to introduce a measure for reforming the House of Lords at the earliest possible moment. The mover said: —If the Labour Party have converted a majority of the people of the country, they will have a perfect right to carry out their revolutionary programme under the Parliament Act. Lord Bryce seconded the motion. Lord Haldane said The only way in which the democracy could be driven into the paths of revolution was by the powers of the House of Lords. It was putting the cart before the horse to make proposals, without first finding out what would commend itself to the Labour Party. Lord Curzon said a Committee of the Cabinet had been considering a reconstruction of the House of .Lords. It was a gigantic task, he said, equivalent to a remodelling of the constitution of the country. He hoped that, next session the Government would introduce a measure which would have a backing inside and outside.of Parliament. That was essential to its success.
