SHOOTING SENSATION

AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION

ADELAIDE March 22. 'A shooting sensation occurred at Riverton. Ail intoxicated man rail wildly amok at the Riverton Railway Station and began shooting all round with a revolver. He shot a woman ami four men. He fired many shots Wore he finally was overpowered by Mr Percy Brookfield the Labour Member of the New South Wales Assembly for Broken Hill. 'Mr Brookfield suffered himself, he being shot twice in the fjtomach. A Russian journalist named Koornat Tomnyeff is in custody charged with the shooting.

It appears that he was travelling from Broken Hill. When the train was stationary at Biverton and the passengers were hurrying from the breakfast room Tomnyeff drew a revolver and fired promiscuously about the platform. Reloading several times he fired a total of 41 shots.

Mr Brookfield secured a revolver and then while Tomnyeff was reloading he grappled u’ith him. During an ensuing struggle Mr Brook field was shot as stated. Mr Brookfield is not expected to recover. The other victims Mere ill's Rice, ol Broken Hill, uho is dangerously Mounded in the breast; Mr W. Crowhurst, of Fnrnaroo and Mr William Smith, of Peterborough, who were shot in the leg and Mr Wm. George, of Xnnmiip, who was shot in the thigh.

Mr Brookfield has been taken to Adelaide by a special train. *

DEATH OF BROOKFIELD

(Received This Day at 10.35 a.in A ADELAIDE, March 23. Brookfield died after an unsuccessful operation. Tomnyeff when, arrested, stated: “I’m sorry I shot Brookfield, hut am not sorry I shot the other people.” The prisoner was much knocked about by the crowd, despite the appeals of the police. His face was smothered with blood and nose was battered. He was considerably bruised. Widespread regret is expressed on all sides SYDNEY, March 23. Mr Dooley, Mr Fuller and the “Telegraph” in a leaderette, pay tribute t<> "'Brookfield’s ’unalloyed sincerity raid courage which was emphasis d by M;e circumstances under which he met his death.
