THE TOWN BEAUTIFUL
-MEETING AT TOWN HALL. After the meeting of the Council last evening, a public meeting was held, convened by the Mayor for tiie purpose of considering the improvement and beautifying of the town. There were about twenty present. The -Mayor (Mr Perry) pres ded and stated the meeting was called for the purpose of considering the proposal to take in hand the beautifying of Cass Square and other parts of the tcv The Borough Council finance, vas strained to its utmost and lie thought
that it would be well for the citizens
to assist financially in tiie improvement of the town both financially and otherwise. Mr Perry read a letter from Hon H. L. -Michel, expressing regret at his absence, but expressing bis hearty approval and co-operation, and enclosing a cheque for £/J os. Also from Mr W. Wilson enclosing cheque for £fi 15s, and from Air D, J. Evans of £2 2s, the latter submitting a suggestion as to the best course for procedure for the object in view. The Mayor said any suggestion that may be brought forward would he considered. He considered that the proposals outlined by Mr Evans were excellent and should have their support.

ported the scheme outlined by Mr Evans and moved that a joint committee be set up to arrange on the lines as proposed. Mr Richards seconded pro forma. Ho urged that a Beautifying Association be formed. He thought 200 members at 10s a year, .could easily he secured it a canvass were made. Mr Coulson supported the motion. He felt the urgent necessity of improving Cass Square and making improvements throughout the town. Mr Wild suggested that if a ne# Council were put in there might he some improvement. The Mayor stated the Councillors were stopped fr6m taking action by the lack of funds. -Mr Pilkington said there was no question of the necessity of the improvement ol Cass Square. He lelt that Cass Square scarcely laid itself out as a sports ground and a place of beauty. He thought Cass Square should he laid out with tioes and paths to make it a place of beauty and rest which could he availed ol at all times. He advocated it being taken in hand at once. Throughout the town there was an urgent necessity for cleaning up in every street, that required much attention. There was much, however, that the citizens could do themselves to render it of much belter appearance. Mr McGregor thought the' public should do the work. If each one helped, much could be done at very little cost. Tin' motion was then put and agreed to. -A committee was set up consisting ot Messrs A. Aitken, W. J. Butler, R. Wild, Niven, Pilkington, A. Keller, J. Lloyd, Shannon, Preston, Rector ol School, Mesdames Butler and Pilkington, lion 11. L. Michel, and 1). J. Evans. It was resolved that Hon H. L. Michel he appointed Chairman, Mr D. J. Evans, vice Chairman, and Air Niven Secretary, with representatives of the sports bodies, Messrs Lawn, lleenan, and Davidson, Misses Thompson and Gondii', and Mrs Bennett to lie asked to also act.,lt wits resolved the general committee meet on the 15th to formulate a scheme.
