WELLINGTON, Feb. 16 The Dominion Conference of officers of local bodies comprising clerks, engineers, secretaries, etc., of Borough Councils, Harbour and Hospital Boards is being held here to consider the formation of a Local Bodies’ Officers’ Association or Guild.
Mr P. Skoglund, Town Clerk, Stratford, is chairman of the meeting, which was addressed by the chairman and Mr Moulan, secretary of the Bank Officers’ Guild. A letter was read from the Minister of Internal Affairs, expressing appronation, and stating that any suggestions that might require legislation would receive very careful eons idem - t ion.
DRAPERS’ FEDERATION. DUNEDIN, Feb. 16. Tlu> New Zealand Federation ot Drapers and Clothiers held their animal Conference to-day, Mr J. Keuneld i Auckland i presiding. The officers elected were as follows:—President, Mr lvendell; vice-president, Mr E. 11. Wvles (Christchurch); member of the Advisory Board, Mr W. Simm < Wellington) ; auditor, Mr M. E. Nicholas (Wellington). It was resolved: That the conference affirm the desirability of closer co-operation between employer and employee and the inauguration among members of a systematic course uf instruction to encourage greater efficiency among the junior members of the stall'; also the proposal that the Government be asked to institute a postage cash on delivery system, he referred hack to the local association for consideration. NORTH rSf-AND HANDS. DANNEVIRKE, Feb. 1(5 At the annual meeting of the North Island Hands Association thanks was expressed to Dannevirke for taking up the running of a contest at such short notice. Twenty-five bands are now affiliated. The balance-sheet showed a c.edit of CGI 19s 3(1. The election of officers resulted: President, R. I-. Coben ; vice-presidents, about 10, including Sir George Hunter, M.P., A, McXieol, M.P., and G. I. Anderson, Mayor of Dannevirke; treasurer, J. .). Mettle (Wanganui); executive, Sergt-Mnjor Anderson (Wanganui), Messrs Wansborough (Marton), Herd (Wellington), Jupp (Wellington), Hoi ion .Palmerston North), Trussed (Wanganui), Williamson Auckland), McComiol (Napier), K. Humphries (Wanganui), Catteley > New Plymouth).
Applications were received from New Plymouth, Wellington, Wanganui and Auckland for the next contest. A Gallot between Wellington and Auckland resulted in Wellington being chosen. The advisability of bolding one contest alternately in the North and South Islands was left to the executive to discuss and confer with the South Island Association.
ACCIDENT ON STEAMER. DUNEDIN,'Feb. 1(5. A man named Cecil Bogke, employed as watchman on the steamer Waikonaiti, fell down the hold of the vessel, a distance of 20 or 25 feet, and sustained severe injuries to his head and limbs. His condition is serious.
