DROWNING FATALITY
CODDEN BOY THE VICTIM A distressing drowning fatality occurred at Cohden yesterday afternoon about I o’clock, when a lad named Noel Bennett ,aged 12 years, son of Mr Albert Bennett of the N.Z. Railways, Greymouth, (and grandson of Mr and Mrs A. Bennett of Hokitika), was drowned. Deceased, in company with a hoy ’named Jack Nelson, of Cohden, went for a swim in the lower end of the lagoon at Cohden. He was not a. good swimmer, hut ho and his companion dived into about seven or eight feet of water. Later, the hoys swam across the lagoon ;yul commenced diving from a springboard. The unfortunate lad. upon his last dive did not come up and Nelson immediately proceeded for help and the police were notified. Senior-Sergt, McCarthy, Constables Bonisch and Houston and several civilians made efforts to recover the body which was eventually recovered, hut life was extinct. The body will ho brought to Hokitika for interment ■
