CHRISTCHURCH. Fib. H. T)r. St. Leger Gribben, Medical Superintendent of the Mental Hospital at Kihikihi in his evidence this morning at the Matthews trial said he had examined the accused on February 4th. and found no signs of insanity in him. There was no grounds on which he could be committed to a mental hospital and no evidence that he was paranoiac. Me was of the opinion from the evidence !*■ bad beard at the trial from accused's personal history and from his examination of accused that accused knew he was firing a pistol and knew that it was wrong to shoot a man. Witness was cross-examined bv Mr Thomas at length, and maintained that he did not believe accused to bo a paranoiac.
