PROBATION INSTEAD OF GAOL. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 7.
Archie Athol Jacobs, a native of the Chatham Islands, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully carnally knowing a girl, also a native. Counsel for the prisoner said prisoner was engaged to the girl at the time of the offence, and was prepared to marry her. The girl was willing. He asked that prisoner should lie placed on probation, so that application could ho made to the court for leave for the marriage of the couple. Mr Justice Herdman said be proposed to take nn unusual course. Prisoned was liable to five years’ imprisonment, but in view of the circumstances be would be admitted to probation for two years', and would have to pay £SO cost of the prosecution.
WAR-TIME GOLD EXPORT. MR MASSEY’S REFUSAL. DUNEDIN, Feb. 11. A deputation representing the Otago and Southland gold mining industry waited on Hon W. F. Massey asking compensation for losses of profits occasioned by the embargo on the export of gold during the war. Mr Massey replied that it was impossible to grant the request, as the law did not provide for any reimbursement by those who bad made extra profit, and he refused to place any additional burden on the taxpayers for that purpose. FOUND GUILTY. WANGANUI, Feb. 11. At the Supreme Court, Stephen Harris for attempted murder and suicide, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment with hard labour. A LONELY DEATH. W AIM ATE, Feb. 11. Anthony Woolstonliolin, single, aged about 45, was found .last evening in bed in a wlmre on a small farm at Wnituna, with his throat cut from ear to ear. He came originally from Yorkshire and has no relations in New Zealand. He had been leasing the Wnitiina property since May last.
