Emir Feisul has protested to Britain against the Mesopotamia and Palestine mandates on the ground they conflict with pledges given to Hussein, and asks Britain to help the Arabs to form their own Government under British advisers.
CLOSING SCHOOLS
CAIRO, Feb 8
Government have closed the secondary schools throughout the country till a guarantee has been given that they will not be used for political purposes.
This is a sequel to the action of an Egyptian headmaster expelling ringleaders of students at Abbasia school in Alexandria, who absented themselves without leave on occasions of the Nationalist delegations return from Paris, whereupon a sympathetic strike broke out in the schools > throughout the country.
SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTIONS
(Received this day at 1.30 p m.i CAPETOWN, February 9.
The latest election returns show the South African party with 54; Nationalist 27; Labour 9; Independent 1. The Ministers, Malan, Burton and Watt are returned by good majorities; also Sir T. Smartt. Country returns are very slow. Hitherto the returns are distinctly favourable to the Government, which, in addition to its gains from Labour captured two Nationalist seats.

CAPETOWN, Feb 9
The contests between the Government supporters and Nationalists in the country districts is unprecedented by keenness. In two cases there were ties and >n a number of instances the margins are of the barest. The Johannesburg Chamber of Mines notified that all employees not resuming work by Friday will bo discharged forthwith. The Mineworkers’ Union urges the. men to resume, but the Secretary of the Central Branch states that the Union will not resume till instructed by bis executive.
