AFFAIRS IN GERMANY
REPUBLIC OR MONARCHY. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, February 7. The “Daily Chronicle’s” Berlin correspondent says that parties of the Right are making a tremendous campaign to secure a majority at the Prussian elections this month, believing such would be the deatli-knell of the German Republic. If successful it will revive the old Prussianised Germany, and be a prelude to a victorious struggle to restore the Monarchy. Their confidence is shown by the boldness of the battlecry: “A strong Prussia- under the Hoiienzollerns.” Their banner is the Prussian black eagle. The Republican parties are divided and disunited, whereas the Conservatives present a united front.
The so-called national people’s par-'v, representing the Junkers and the People’s party representing the great .n----dustrialists, have begun a vigorous campaign with proclamations eulogising Prussia’s old place in the German Empire and the virtue of the Hohenzollerns.
The Nationalists manifesto savs: “This day decides whether the work of the great Hoiienzollerns and Bisnnrk will regain the old path to great ipss and glory. The Nationalists everywhere in Germany are looking to Prussia to free them from French insolpnce and JBri tish malice, and enable the German colours to wave proudly again over tho world’s seas.” Westrap and Dr Hertz the Conservative leaders in a manifesto sav: —“We can only be a sound nation when we again save the Kaiser.” One leading propagandist of the Peoples’ Party, Dr. Boelitz, says:—“Unify of Empire can only be founded on the Kaiser’s idea.” Dr. Stresseman’ announces that the Treaty of Versailles is only an episode. Germany lias not yet fulfilled her mission. GERMANY’S' INTERIOR POLITICO. (Received This Day at 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, February 17. The “Daily Chronicle’s” Berlin correspondent says that with unlimited funds of industrial trusts, the reactionaries have embarked on a tremendous publicity campaign which which the rivals find it impossible to complete. They have already flooded Berlin with pamphlets and posters, many of which blame the Republican regime for high prices of food and the shortage, and labour troubles.
.One danger to the Republic is that tho administration remains in the hands of officials few of whom are genuine Republicans. Military protection still rests with the officers corps, which is ,admittedly M'onJarchial. Reactionaries methods render a coup d’etat unlikely. Their new strategy is less- risky and more effective, namely to place the Government of the Republic in Monarcbial hands.
