WESTLAND HOSPITALS AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7th The Board met at 8 p.m. Present Messrs R. Wild (Chairman), Blank, Davidson, Chinn, Morel, Chinn, Monk and Ritchie.
An apology was made for the absence of Mr S. Evans.
The minutes of the previous meetings were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD correspondence. From Dr. Valintine, Wellington, re funds for capital purposes; re blankets; re Commission; re subsidies (already published). —Received ; Mr Ritchie movcd that the Chairman be appointed to act as delegate at the Hospitals Commission. Seconded by Mi Bnn \■ J 1 ™ carried. Mr Blank moved that £lo be voted'. Seconded by Mr Scarle. Mr Davidson moved that £2O be w>ti< • Seconded l.v Mr Morel and carried. Becoming the motion, the latter amount was agreed to. From Same conveying replies to enquiries as to working conditions of nurses in public hospitals, and asking what steps the Board proposes to make to give effect to proposals for shorter hours for nurses.—Received: The Chairman said this meant the increasing of the staff by one sister and two nurses. Mr Blank moved that the 1 correspondence be referred to.the Cha-r----1 man of the House Committee to deal with Seconded bv Mr Ritchie and car-
riod. From Same, supplying copy of letter from Public Works Department stating tl, e Department before calling for tenders for the new wing, would require the Board to deposit the amount involved and then the Department would invite tenders.- —Received; It was resolved to defer consideration of the calling for tenders until there was more material in sight, so as to curtail as much delay as possible, when once a start was made.

From Government Statistician, Wellington, asking for returns.—Received From North Canterbury Board, stating permission was granted loi Di, Bathgate visiting Arthur’s Pass.—Deceived.
From Railway District Engineer Greymouth, warning members of the Board, against trespassing on railway line near hospital.— Deceived. From Chief Post-master, Hokitika, stating a telephone office was proposed to be opened at Potter’s Creek, Tatare, at a cost of £lO to the Hoard. —Deceived and accepted us satisfactory.
From Park and .Murdoch applying for payment of an amount stated to be due to Pearn’s Brewery.—Deceived; request for particulars already made.
From H. W. Sandle, Stafford, urging assistance for two aged Chinamen. —Received; £2 per month each was granted. It was resolved to apply to local Chinamen for donations.
From Mies. MeDiarmid, Kumara, asking for permission to visit the Old People’s Home after hours.—Received; It was resolved to adhere to the hours for visiting fixed at last meeting. From Ashburton Board, applying lor information as to formation of cottage hospitals in district.—Received; information supplied. From Government Insurance Department, particulars of increase in accident rates. —Received. From Timaru Board asking for particulars of staff.—Received.
From Ross Borough Council forwarding 3 months levy.—Received. From Otago Board forwarding accounts outstanding.—Received; It was resolved to supply the address of the person responsible for the outlay.
From Otira Committee returning vouchers and accounts for January; reporting five men were at work at Otira hospital and enclosing letter from Arthur’s Pass agreeing to find vob lintary contribution for services of Dr Bathgate at Arthur’s Pass.—Received, and approved. From Sister Baker, South Westland Nurse, reporting 4 visits during the month and expressing appreciation of assistance given by South Westland people and the Board.—Received. reports. The House Committee (per Mr Davidson) reported conditions at Westland Hospital as satisfactory recommending some small repairs and that two carters responsible for damage done be asked to reimburse Board. —Received From Finance Committee recommend ing payment of accounts amounting to £454 18s Bd.—Received. From Treasurer reporting receipts £2012 2s 4d; payment, £1,119 11s 4d; credit balance £440 10s od.—Received. TENDERS FOR. LAUNDRY. The Chairman stated that two tenders had been received for the erection of a building for the laundry. These had been considered by tho sub-committee who had considered the cost involved was far too heavy for the Board to finance. Mr. Davidson moved that the question of having the plans altered to '■ost not more than £IOOO, ho referred to the Chairman to bring it under the Notice of the Department. Seconded by Mr Ritchie. The Chairman stated the matter was an urgent one ns it was desired to have the laundry erected as soon as possible. The motion was agreed to. Tt was resolved that the two tenders Ire returned. The Board rose at 10.15 p.m.
