VERDICT OF SUICIDE.

WELLINGTON, Feb. 4 ‘ ( At the adjourned inquest on Hurry Magnusson, whose dead body was found in the harbour, the Coroner entered up a verdict of suicide by drowning through a fit of temporary depression caused by the refusal of the authorities to grant deceased permission to go to sea as a seaman. The Coroner - said that it could not ho said that the authorities were in any way to blame for their refusal, as they were merely carrying out regulations in the interest of the public. Deceased’s record was such that it was deemed inadvisable to grant him a permit.

ACCIDENT TO ATHENIC. WELLINGTON, Feb. 5 Letters have been received, stating that on her last voyage to England, the Atlantic was seriously damaged by a collision in Panama Canal.' She was followed by the steamer Victoria, which humped into her while the Atlantic was trying to avoid a collision with an oil ‘ steamer, that suddenly appeared in front. The side of the Athenie and a life boat was hadlv damaged, the cabins flooded and the passengers had to be temporarily shifted. Temporary re- ! pairs were effected at Colon. All cargo i had to be taken out of tlie ship. The damage is stimatod at mot less than j £IO,OOO. An enquiry at Colon exonerated Captain Crossland of the Athenie.
