[by TELEGRAPH—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] i QUEEN MARY HOSPITAL. | CULVERDEN, Jan 26. This morning the Hon J. G. Coates, accompanied by Mr G. W. Forbes M.P. inspected the Queen Mary Military Hospital at Hanmer, where there are about eighty patients. Gardening and sports are thu compulsory aim of the institution, the object being to get th e men to do a little light work. The treatment has proved particularly successful. The necessity for an improved water supply was brought under the Minister’s notice by the officer commanding, Major Chisholm, and by Mr J. Dodds. ! On behalf of the residents, Major Chisholm said that the present wooden pipes had out-lived their usefulness, and the whole system was in danger of collapse. Mr Dodds said that with a better system the township could get the bene- j fit of electric light. The Minister promised to look into both aspects of the question. I

Gisborne girl, while his wife a native woman, whom he married at Opotiki two years previously, was still living. | REPORTED DROP IN BUTTER. GISBORNE, Jan 28. The Tntanekai returned this morning from a cruise to Bounty, Antipodes i and Campbell Islands. The food depots at Bounty and Antipodes were intact. Owing to had weather they were unable to land stores and material for the erection of a new depot at Bounty. > There was no sign of castaways. The vessel spent two days at Campbells, The men employed there are in good health and the season was reported to be excellent. About 3200 sheep were * shorn out of six thousand. OYER THE BANK. MOTOR-LORRY’S BLUNGE. HASTINGS, Jan 25. The third of a series of accidents in the Knra.mii bridges locality occurred this afternoon when a wool-laden lorry proceeding to Napier, swerved, it is said owing to the locking of the steering gear, broke through the fencing on tin; roadside and toppled over a sixfeet, embankment, about 25 yards from the second bridge. The driver went over with the lorry, but was unhurt. This is the third accident since New Year’s Day when a motor ’bus load of excursionists went over the first bridge
into a telegraph pole about 150 yards on the Coast side of the bridge, and two of the party were badly cut about the heads and legs. Tills accident was also attributed to the steering gear going wrong. It was suggested at the inquest of the victim of the first accident that the disaster might be due to the had approach to the bridge. ALLEGED PERJURY. DUNKDTN, January 28. Louis Gleason, formerly a contractor, was committed for trial on a charge of making assertions on oath during the examination in his bankruptcy proceedings, intending to mislead the assignee, the assertion being that he never had a racehorse and did not hid at auction for the horse Gold Albert. Accused reserved his defence. COL. LUXFORD DEAD. AUCKLAND, Jan. 28. Chaplain Colonel .T. A. Luxford, a veteran of the South African and Great War, died to-day.
