OKURU NOTES

(From a Correspondent)

A recent meeting of settlers at Okuru decided upon the formation of a dairy factory there to make butter, the sum of £I4OO being guaranteed with a promise of more if required. There is already a guarantee of 260 cows, which it is expected will be brought up to 400. As the shortage of cement will pause considerable delay in building operations in September and it will have to be deferred till later. It is expected that the district wilt have a big future before it, being eminently suited for dairying purposes. The sum of £750 lias been guaranteed for the Hokitika Shipping Company. This means progress, and all that the district requires is more settlers. Land here can be purchased at such a low figure that the values cannot be approached in any other part of the Dominion. There is a fair extent of Crown lands for settlement, whilje ~~ partly improved sections can be obtained at £3 per acre. Some of the Crown lands is partly swamp, open for selection on renewable lease, over 66 years, and can be secured at 10/- per acre.

Everybody had good burns this season. Nolan Bros. 300 acre block at Cascade was the record burn, and the young turnips are looking very well, and should well reward them for their enterprise and outlay
