GERMAN TRADE

A DETERMINED EFFORT. BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSN., COPYRIGHT. “ THE - TIMES ” SERVICE (Received This Day at 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 11. The present year will,, witness a most determined effort by Germany to regain her pre-wav hold on the world markets. Already a flood of imports to England from the • fatherland, including huge stocks of toys, machinery, textiles, has seriously affected the economic situation and greatly added to unemployment and closing of factories. Now Leipzig fair, Which hitherto was substantially fostered and subsidised by the German Government is prepared for a gigantic world-wide trade sweep, directed particularly against their late enemies, and a revival of Germany’s overseas trade. Tt has applied to Government for twenty million marks to be spent on trade propaganda abroad. This is in marked contrast with 1919, when it asked for and was granted only one million. The Directors of the fair recognise that to be completely successful the scheme will involve another twenty million. This thdy are endeavouring to raise from private firms. The rehabitation of Germany’s shipping is slowly but surely proceeding, and necessarily will largely affect the situation of the Hamburg-Amerika company. An extraordinary meeting decided to raise capital by a sum up to one hundred million marks. The chairman referred to the danger of foreign interests becoming predominant, and stated that Hamburg was rapidly becoming a prosperous port.
