At the L’ulice Court, James Arthur! Frost and Thomas Potter pleaded , guilty to charges of carrying on bust- , ness as bookmakers on January Ist and , other dates. Chief Detective Bishop ; explained the accused were arrested on New Years Day. They entered hookmaking about a year ago, and had been betting o:i a small scale. Alien arrested both admitted the offence and had now given an assurance they would net offend in future. This was the first prosecution under the new Act. L»ch were lined £IOO.
NEW YEAR FROLIC
GISBORNE, Jan. 5
A riotous affray is reported, from Ruatou-ea, East Coast. A party of twenty to thirty Aiaoris, at 1 a.m. mi New Year’s Day rode up to the hotel, and commenced to stone the building. The license Ravnbam remonstrated with the hooligans who attacked him. He was borne down by the weight of numbers and freely kicked and struck by | the • rioters. He finally managed to struggle back to shelter whereupon the natives galloped away. Raynham was badly knocked about receiving cuts and bruises about the face, hands, and body.

At 10.30. this morning a motor with a party of six capsized at Hnmaria, on tho cast shore of Lake Taupo. Mrs Doran, Lower Hutt, was killed hut the others were not seriously injured.
