A MOST SUCCESSFUL MEETING
SECOND DAY’S RACING
The Westland facing Club conclud- ( ed its summer, meeting yesterday afternoon when they were again favoured j with'a perfect day. The attendance ; was again large though several hundred i short of the numbers of the previous day. iho racing again proved very interesting. Thei-e Wfeto good fields and keen contests, soiffe iflf the finishes being very close, and hi doubt until the judge’s decision Was Mtiouncod. The various official* W'eWe Wt their posts, and carried out theft’(fotiiis in that pleasant tactful manner foil- Which the President and his officers have Wbn quite a reputation among visitors, the whole gathering passed off most successfully. The Town fearnl was again present and played a choice programme. The totahsator under the capable management of Mr H. Lynch and staff, handled the sti»i J of £11,722 which with £12,719, for the previous day, made a grand total for the "meeting of £24,441, as against £19,152 for last year’s summer meeting and beating the record of the Jubilee Meeting when £22,95(1 was passed through the machine. Tho gates again showed substantial takings, which for the two days amounted to £SOB as against £439 last year. The Westland Cup, run over the Westland mile drew ten competitors, and tho fine field caused milch speculation, the sum of ,£2435 being put on the machine. A fino race resulted ill a win for Mr D. H. Roberts, (Grcymouth), b.gi Castellan, rider and horse being accorded a hearty reception on returning to the birdcage. After weighing out the President of the Club (Mr W. E. Williams) speaking from the centre of the birdcage, congratulated Mr Roberts very heartily on having won the Westland Cup, this being the second occasion, Mr Roberts having won the Cup in Jubilee year also. Mr Willhlttis continhing, said he was glad t'6 have seen such a splendid race, a fid A’gaitl congratulated the winner. He would ask Mr Seddon to make the presentation of the Cup; (a handsome silver . one, mounted on a. neat pedestal). Before doing so he wished to thank Mr Seddon for the great interest he had shown in tho beautifying of the racecourse. Those who had -heed BaWfad tlie course would have seen the splendid lot of flowering shrubs and ti-ebs. that MiSeddon had supplied, Ail'd ih a feuyears they would fill'd tfol c&ifsfe one of the beauty spots of till distHct. He wished to personally express his appreciation of tin; valued assistance Mr Seddon had so freely given in this connection.
Mr T. E. Y. Seddon M.P., congratulated the owner on his suceess j but he also wished to congratulate the Governmeht of the country who had introduced tho stallion from which the winner was .bred, so as to improve the purebred stock in this country, and he was glad to know that the efforts had ibornc good fruit. It was with pleasure he congratulated Mi- Roberts oh his success in winning the handsome trophy. He was a local sportsman and it was also "ratifying to remember that he had also won the Jubilee Cup over the same eoilrse. - His. win would help to encourage the love of the sport on the /West Coast. Mr Seddon then made the presentation of the silver trophy to Mr Roherts, and called fob cheers for the owner, jockey and horse, which were heartily given by the assemblage. Mr Roberts said he was very pleased to have won the Cup, and also the Jubilee Cup. He assured them that it had always been a matter of great pleasure in winning- the Jubilee Chip and tho pleasure of winning the present Cup was second only to that happy remembrance. Subsequently tho health of the owner was toasted in the pavilion. The racing results were as follows: — STAFFORD HANDICAP of £IOO, 6i furlongs.

From an even start Kolyma got in front and held the lead till the hack was reached when Royal Dragoon came up fast only to die away and entering the straight May Morn came fast and took the lead with Perrier as next in attendance. May Morn won easily at the finish by two lengths, Recorder who came fast at tho distance being half a length away third. Time 1.98. Tote £1075.
GOLDFIELD HANDICAP of £IOO, 5 furlongs.
Gold Problem 9.11 1 Sleepy Head 8.6 2 Irish Elegance 8.5 3 Also started:—Koesian 9.12, Tyson 8.4, Black Night 7.8, Cashman 7.4. Tyson and Koesian played up at the starting post. Ultimately when the field were let away Koesian again swung round and bumped into Tyson, .both failing to get away with the rest. Gold Problem, Sleepy Head and Irish Elegance joined issue at the corner, and a great race up the straight, almost in line saw Gold Problem just get up in time to win by a head. Irish Elegance being half a head away third. Time 1.6. Tote £1557. J TASMAN HANDICAP HIIRDUES. of £l4O, 11 miles. Stravshot 10.2 I War Tax 9.13 2 Persian Prince 10.4 3 Also started:—Master Boris Silver Shield 9.0. „ War Tax led tho field past tho stand the first time round with Straysliot and Persian Prince close up. All jumped well till tho second last hurdle where Silver Shield made a' mistake and came down. Straysliot had taken charge at tho back of the course and came homo an easy winner by four lengths, Persian Prince being third, a length away. Time 2.54. Tote £1,512. WESTLAND CUP HANDICAP, of £240, and silver cup valued at £25. 1 mile. Castellan 7.11 1 High Heels 8.5 2 Ahika 8.3 Also started:—Benefit 9.1, Tantalus 8.7, Perrier 8.2, Lady Middleton 8.4, Chaeronia 8.1 (bracketed with High Heels) Xantlios 7.8, Ladify 7.8. From an excellent start Benefit and Castellan showed the way. There was somo bumping coming towards the stand. As the field went round the turn Perrier put in a claim, with High
Heels in third place. The pace was a cracker, and the field well bunched. In th o straight ’Castellan took the lead, and High Heels put in a big claim, but could not get up, Castellan winning a fine race by three parts of a length, with Ahika half a length away. Perrier was fourth and Ladify fifth. Time 1.47 4-5. Toto £2435. The presentation of the Silver Cup was then made to the owner, Mr D. H. Roberts, by Mr T. E. Y. Seddon M.P. nt the request of the President (Mr W. E. Williams), (referred to elsewhere). SUMMER HANDICAP of £IOO, 51 furlongs.

Carnbrea was made a hot favourite and made no mistake, taking the Jeffd and holding it easily by three lengths, third a length away. Tho unreliable Tyson again failed to get going promptly. Tinie 1.14. Tote £l4/1. North Inch on returning to the paddock had a large piece of skin off the off-hind leg at, the rump, the size of a tea plate, caused by a bump on to tho rails diiVihg the race. The colt will he given a, spell for the rest of the season. WELTER WEIGHT HANDICAP, of £l2O, 7 ffirlorigs.

Tho latter gradually improved her position, and at the entrance, to the straight came away and romped homo easily by three lengths, Grand Duchy just beating Pussyfoot for third place. Time 1.35.
