successful, FIRST DAY. '■
Tho Westland Racing Club which had boon forced to postpone tho opening day on Monday (Boxing Day) owing to the great downpour and its resultant flood, were favoured with a perfect day yesterday for tta opening of their summer meeting. The day broke gloriously fine, with a fill) sunshine record for the whole day, anfj the King’s weather brought a great crowd almost of record proportions to t}>© Club’s preftv racecourse. TJje. trains from north and south brought large crowds, and the courso was.spoi) a very busy scene. The course was ip capital order and caused much favourable comment owing ,to its entire recovery front the rain of tho pro vious day. There were large fields for every race and the apart was of a very high class. , Speculation was brisk and Mr H. Lynch and his staff were very successful in handling the investments in a very prompt manner, the sum of £12,721 being handled for the day, as against £8626 for the opening day last year, a vepy substantial increase of £4095 for the day.
The attendance was large and the gate reeipts in spite of the reduced entrance charge, was substantially' larg-' er, totalling nearly £3OO. The Stewards and various officials were all in their places and giving every attention to their duties, the whole programme passing off most successfully.- The fields were large and the various events splendidly contested, some fast tjmes being recorded. Patrons appreciated the improvemnts made since last meeting in throwing open the whole gropnds for the promenade, and it- assisted in preventing any congestion, the innovation mek'tiHg with general commendation. 7t|r Piper, of Christchurch was stipendiary steward and carried out his duties in a capable manner. The starter (Mr Rutland) and handicapper (Rr Noble) both had successful days, the parting and racing being excellent. TJio booths and luncheon rooms all did a big business. The Town Band was pf-esent, and enlivened the proceedings with ah enjoyable musical programme The day proved highly successful from every point of view. Results were ns follows:
GOLDSBORO UGH HANDICAP of 100 soars. 61 furlongs. Tantalus (7.13) 1 Royal Dragoon (7.2) 2 May Morn (8.0) 3 Also started:—High Heels 9.2, Recorder 9.0, Xanthos 8.8, Castellan 7.13, Waikohti 7.11, Kolyma. 7.10, Blade Night 7.9. The field went away well together, Beeorder showing the way to Tantalus. The latter soon got into the lead. Entering the straight there was a forward move made, but Tantalus easily held the advantage and won by a length from Royal Dragoon, who finished on the outside, Maymorn half a length away third. Time 1 min. 27 secs. Tote £1258. PROVINCIAL TIANDICA P of £l2O, five furlongs. Braid, 9,3 1 Koesinn 9.8 2 Irish Elegance 8.3 3 Also started.—Gold Problem 9.2, Sleepy Head 8.8, Tyson 8.5, Amendment 7.3, Cushman 7.8_ Tyson failed to get away from an otherwise good start. Braid went to the front, hut at the back Sleepy Head temporarily took charge. Braid again going up, and holding the lend to the finish, Tvoesian coming in the straight, but could not make any impression on the leader who won by a length. Irish Elegance half a lengt liaway. Time 1 min. 6 2-5 secs. Tote £1675.
“pacific handicap HUT!PDFS of £l6O, 1:] miles. Master Boris 11.8 1 War Tax 9.10 2 Persian Prince 10.7 3 Also started:—Strayshot 10.2,-*Silver Shield 9.0, Eron Boy 9.0. From a good Btart the field came to the first hurdles nearly in line. All through the hurdles were cleanly jumped. Eron Boy led from War Tax the first time round and Master Boris Being next. After the first round War Tax led past the stand from Eron Boy, Strayshot making an effort for a, finish till he found the field going on for another rotind. At the hill Master Boris went to the front with Persian Prince also getting up into a handy position to War Tax. Master Boris easily held his own in thp straight and won easily By two lengths, War Tax Being a Bead off Persian Prince, who finished fast, with Eron Boy fourth, Strayshot and Silver Shield last. Time 3.6 4-5. Tote £1703.
HOKITIKA HANDICAP of £IBO, li miles. Benefit 8.3
Chneronia 7.9 2 Grand Duchy 7.3 3 Also dtalrted.—Nautical, 9.1, Tyne 7.13, Ladify 7.8. The. field went awaywell together, Benefit taking the lead. Coming down the Back straight, Ladify gojt a Bump and fell, and took no further part in the race. The jockey was not hurt, and stated that the bmnp was an accidental one. Benefit continued to lend the field from Tyne and Grand Duchy, with Chaeronia liandv. Coming into the straight Benefit easily stalled off a challenge from Chaeronia, and won by , two lengths, Grand Duchy half a length away, finishing fast. Tyne was fourth and Nautical last. Time 2.19 2-5. Tote £2189. '■
CHRISTMAS HANDICAP of £IOO, of furlongs. Carnbfrea 8.3 1 Tyson 9.0 2 Gossard 8.11 3 Also started:—Amendment 8.4, Zeln 8.1, Goldpiece 8.10, North Inch 8.1. Tyson took charge at the start with North Inch eloso. up. The latter took command, but Carnbrea had the lead before tbe straight was entered, and won < asily by two lengths, Gossard five lengths away. Time 1.14. Tote £2002. ‘ J-TIO H WEIGHT HANDTCAP of £l2O, 7 furlongs. Perrier 8.2 1 Cheer Up 8.8 2 Ahika 8.13 3 Also started:—Lady Middleton 8.3, Divorce 9.2, Bomb 8.13, Fabisco 8.6, Pussyfoot 8.7, Royal Dragoon 8 0. Divorce led the field from a capital ftart, Perrier close up. Cheer Up took charge at the back, but Perrier again got in front before the straight was reached and won handily by a lengtfk Cheer Up half a. length in front of
Ahik’a who finished fast, with Divorce fourth. Time-)..34 J-5. Tote £2003. FLYING 'HANDICAP of £IOO, 5 furlongs. Gold Problem 9.2 and Lady Gazeley 7.6 (dead heat 1 Braid 9.2 ! ® Also started:—Trentham Rose *.12, Woodrow 7.0, Preludinm 7.0. From a fine start, Lady GaV.eley, Gold Problem and Braid showed just in front. A fine race ensued, and coming up tire, straight i Lady Gazeley holding the lead in a fine struggle, hut Gold Problem just got up I in time to make a dead heat, Braid a ■ length . away and Trentham Rose very ‘close tip fourth.
