They had early morning .tea and a light breakfast. The Wahine sails to-night. The passengers .have to shift for themselves. The Araliura’s trip to Lyttelton on Friday is abandoned. MEN TO RESUME. WELLINGTON, Dec. 23. Mr Kennedy, Manager of the Union Steamship Company, announced at two o’clock that he had received intimation from the cooks and stewards union that instructions had been given to the men to withdraw all notices to leave, and to resume duty. The question of wages was left over until after the .holidays. ■ STRIKE ENDS SUDDENLY. CHRISTCHURCH, December 23. About 30 of the Wahine’s stewards handed in 24 hours notice this afternoon. Immediately afterwards the men received a telegram from their Wellington headquarters, instructing them to withdraw their notices, and also instructing the Maori’s stewards, who had remained behind on Wednesday night to resume work when the vessel arrived at Lyttelton tomorrow morning. The men were' much relieved on receiving the instructions. They at once withdrew their notices, j The Maori men will resume in the '■ morning.

The steamer Wahine sailed for Wellington at 8.55 to-night.

THE CUT BONUS. CHRISTCHURCH, December 23.

A meeting of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers was held at the Trades Hall to-night, about 200 were present, to consider the question of taking drastic action with regard *'o the recent reduction in the eost-of-living bonus. The following Absolution was passed:—That this branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers immediately cancel their registration under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, and that our delegates on the Iron Trades Council bring the matter before the Boiler Makers and Moulders delegates, with a view to their taking the same action also; and that we. notify other centres asking them to do the same.

SYDNEY STRIKE NEWS.

FIGHT TO A FINISH,

SYDNEY, December 23. There is no likelihood of the stewards strike being settled. The coastal branch of the Merchants Service Guild has passed a motion expressing sympathy with the stewards. The latter state that the fight is going to be one to a finish. Possibly the whole of the waterside unions will 'lie involved. The owners are also determined, a proof of which is Huddart Parker’s cancelling of the sailing of tile Riverina to-day, although the ves- : sel could have sailed before the men’s notice expired. Other companies are having vessels towed front the wharf to anchorage, where they will remain until the dispute is settled. Almost all the stewards who sailed in the Manuka are New Zealanders. The Union Coy. are still hopeful of despatching the Malieno on Friday.
