Henry Sales, a married man who resided at Winchester Street, Lyttelton, died in the Christchurch Hospital on Thursday night from ptomaine poisoning. Deceased’s children were also attacked with ptomaine poisoning, and one of them is still an inmate of tho Christchurch Hospital. Sales was 32 years of age. He leaves a widow and two children, one three years and another fourteen months.

A first aid competition was lately held among the children of Hari Hari and La Fontaine there being nine competitors, and was won by George Robertson (Hari Hari), Albert Hall (La Fontaine) was second and Peter Lucas (Hari Hari) third Hie examination was conducted by Dr. James Wilson Mcßrearty of Greymouth. Hie competition was the outcome of a request of the settlers of these districts to Mr West, who spent a week in teaching the children on the question of the treatment of wounds accompanied by arterial haemorrhage. The Chairman of the Greymouth Harbour District Commission (Mr A. D. Thomson) has notified the local bodies concerned that the Commission will sit at the Court house, Greymouth, on Wednesday, 12th.fl January, at 10 o’iclock;. It is understood the date fixed is not considered convenient for some of' the northern local bodies and a postponement of the sitting for a week lis been asked for. As there is likely to be a large number of witnesses from the Westland district, the Commission is being asked to hold a, sitting at Hokikitika.

Wo deeply regret to record the death of Mr John Maunder, Overseer to the Hokitika Borough Council which took place just after midnight this morning. Hie deceased wag eldest son of the late Mr ‘and Mrs John Maunder, coal merchant of Hokitika, and was a native of Hokitika and 46 years of age. For a long time; past deceased had been in very indifferent health, suffering from diabetes, and at the beginning of the month he found it necessary to take sick leave, the end coming this morning. Deceased was a conscientious worker, and had keen in charge of the Borough works for. a number of years and also the water supply since its inception. He leaves a widow and family of five (one son, George and four daughters). Very general sorrow will lie felt at the death of' a worthy citizen.
