LONDON, v October 14. “I have never had.such a season in the whole of my 30 years’ experience,” said a big London bookmaker yesterday. “I have never booked so many bets.

“Not that it is all profit, mind you,” ho added cautiously. “It’s the women who are doing the Business, I. have more women than men clients; and they give twice the amount of trouble and correspondence. “Most women do not go in just for the ‘straightforward’ business of , backing one or two horses to win.* That is not

exciting or remunerative enough for tlierii. What they like are long' odd chances. So they have accumulators of all sorts and descriptions, doubles, trebles, mixed doubles, and so forth. “These involve a very great deal of

calculation and book-keeping. Frequently the backers themselves are not too good at arithmetic, and disputes and lengthy correspondence ensue. I have one woman client who picks out six horses every day and backs them in ss. mixed doubles. Sh<s doesn’t do badly at it either.” Betting women generally pay up as promptly as men, and take their, losses lin true sporting spirit. “But,” said tb e bookmaker, “some of them do worry your life out over five .bob.” Bracket, the winner of the Cesarewitcli yesterday, was a popular fancy among the women, probably because of her own sex, and the fact that she belonged to a woman owner. The 'betting in connection with yesterday’s big race is probably several times grea- * ter than over any former Cesarewitch owing to the ever increasing interests taken in horse-racing by amateur punters.
