There is an attractive array of acceptances for the Hokitika races which open on Monday week. All the events have filled exceedingly well, and there is the promise of an excellent sporting meeting. The course and appointments are reported to be in first class order, and everything appears to he in good train for the meeting. Motor traction is taking a hold of this district. Several machines are on order for this immediate neighbourhood, and will be used mainly in connection with timber traction. In one instance three motor lorries are being brought here by a ‘carrier, who proposes to set up in general business, and lias work assured in advance for the three machines. The fleet of lorries will be added to, as the business expands.
It is notified the Kanieri river bridge above the Power House, Lake Kanieri road, will be open for light traffic from 8 o’clock this evening. The County authorities have done good work in restoring traffic at the point referred to in such quick time. During next week a special effort will he concentrated on Morris Hill to have the cutting in good order for tlie holiday"traffic.

With the whitebait season just completed and a comparative failure, there has been a revisitation of the red cod at the'river mouth and quite a number have been caught of late. The smooth sea has also allowed some fishing off the sea beach in places and there are reports of several selinapper having Wen I,«j fled. Flounders have been remark ibly scarce lately, a rather unusual circumstance at this time of the year. The perfect summer weather of the past? few days has brought home the necessity of the swimming baths. Hie river and sea have drawn devotees to their Waters, quite a number of both sexes, disporting themselves afternoon and morning. The sea has been very calm during the past few days. Hie day yesterday was extremely warm, quite the hottest of the season. During the evening a change came and ih the early hours some heavy showers of rain fell that cooled the atmosphere. The morning was cloudy.
The Public Works Committee of the Westland County Council met during tlie week, and conferred with• Overseer Millner in regard to action to facilitate the expenditure of Government grants more rapidly. Various actions were determined upon, and on the main aspect, in view of the shortage of labor etc. it was resolved to recommend the Council to purchase a Leyland motor tipping lorry on certain terms and conditions to be reported, payment to be spread oyer a year to bo made out of revenue. The Committee report will be presented at the January meeting of the Council.
In the.'nautical enquiry concerning a collision between the ships Vindex, (Capt. W. J. Tregigda) and Oban (Capt J. Reeves), on the 17th August, the Court at Nelson found that the casualty was caused by reason of the master of the Oban failing to keep a sufficient look-out on Kis starboard side, and the master of tlie Vindex, while under engine power and sail, with the wind aft', not allowing sufficient sea room when approaching the Oban to allow for emergencies.
