There is the promise of a strong string of horses coming this way for the Christmas meeting. Braid was brought' through from Otira yesterday to Greymouth and arrived here this morning. Several North Island horses will reach next week, when the Christchurch contingent will also begin to arrive.
The repairs to the Kaniqri river bridge on the Lake road above the power station at the Forks are being pushed on with all dispatch. In order to hasten the work and have the bridge ready for traffic as quickly as possible, Overseer Millner is putting on two shifts per day, thus enabling sixteen hours continuous work to be performed daily. By this means it is hoped to have the bridge ready for traffic well in advance of the holiday traffic. The Minister for Mines has informed the Canterbury Petroleum Company that the Government has authorised the .payment of a subsidy of £IOOO to assist in the boring operations at the company’s works at Chertsey. The grant has been made on the distinct understanding that no part of such money is to be used by the company in payment of any debts or other expenses incurred before the date of the passing of the grant. The staff at the well has en-> countered many difficulties since the beginning of the year,'the chief obstacle being a pump which had fallen to the bottom of the well wire rope breaking. For several months past endeavours have been made to break up this obstacle, and the manager is hopeful to achieve this difficult task at an early date, when boring operations will be again carried out.
