The death took place yesterday -of Mrs William McPherson, wife of Captain McPherson, assistant harbour master at Greymouth after a brief illness, and it camo as a great shock to her husband, family and numerous friends. Mrs McPherson bad lived in Greymouth for the past 50 years. She was born in England and came out here to marry Captain McPherson. She leaves a family of two daughters, Mrs James Brown, of Blaketown, and Miss McPher son who is at home, and a married son, William.
Tlie final euchre and dance of the season which takes place at St. Mary’s Club rooms to-morrow evening promises to 1)© a hug© success. The sealed envelope prizes donated by Mrs W. Jeffries will be keenly competed for and no doubt wili be a pleasant surprise to the lucky winners. The second prizes are also valuable ones and have been presented by well wishers of the Club. The music for the dance will be in capable hands. The movement for the establishment of the West Coast Industrial Ambulance Association, has met with the unanimous support of the employees of thirteen sawmills in the Hokitika district. The contributions from the workers of those mills, who have endorsed the petition, as set out by the Camerons mill employees, will amount to £6O. The organiser Mr T. Apparently as the result of a local appearing recently in the newspapers circulating on the Coast regarding the largle numbtefr of passengers already booked during Christmas Week in the Ferry Service between Lyttelton and Wellington, intending passengers 'ini this District proposing to travel about that time are somewhat exercised m mind as to accommodation being available for them in the steamers. The Local Agent of the Union Steam Ship Co., advises that he has no knowledge of any excess bookings .so far ahead as /stated :in the local in question and that he cannot understand from which source the information was obtained, as
advices bearing on the accommodation available is invariably supplied him by bis Christchurch office.
The plain and fancy dress ball in the Three Mile Hall last evening proved a great success. The fancy dresses worn wore as follows: Miss B. Muir, (Old Mother Hubbard); Mrs Cunningham and Miss B. Havill, (Good-night); Miss E. Shannon, (Picture-postcard); Misses Craig and Lloyd, (Gollywogs); and Miss E. Marshall. During the supper interval a ballot was taken which resulted in Miss B: Muir securing the ladies’ first prize and Mrs Cunningham the gent’s prize. After supper dancing was again continued, the music being supplied by Mrs Lousich, extras being played by Miss N. Scott. Mr Lousich held charge of the floor and officiated in his usual capable manner. With the singing of Auld Lang Syne, the proceedings terminated, being voted one of the most pleasant gatherings ever held in the Three Mile Hall. Mr. J.
