The Ministry of Transport has evolved a great water power scheme for harnessing tides in the Severn, evolving separate proposed gigantic barrages across the estuary to prevent the water escaping when the tide ebbs, except through turbines which will develop upwards of a million horse power; also, an immense pumping station using the electrical energy from the barrage for filling a vast high level reservoir for water storage against tlie time, when water for the turbines is deficient. It is estimated the cost of generation will be approximately a half-penny per unit, effecting a yearly saving of four million tons of coal. JAPANESE FINANCE. TOKrO, Nov. 25. A change of front on the part of the French Government appears imminent, according to the newspapers. The Premier, speaking before the Foreign Affairs Committee stated Government had decided to permit French merchants and manufacturers to open com-, mercial relations with Soviet Russia,' though there was no question of recognising the Bolshevik Government. The Premier also stated Germany was keeping the Spa agreements and had reduced the army to 150 thousand and delivered coal as promised.
REPATRIATION PROPOSALS. (Received This Day at 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 26. Lieut Stabbaek, formerly on Majoi General Gollibrand’a staff, and non Secretary of.the Australian and Neiv Zealand discharged soldiers association interviewed, stated his committee welcomed the repatriation proposals as liberal, without being over generous, practically based on the Committee’s recommendation to the High Commissioner. In the last six months, there were approximately eight thousand discharged soldiers in Britain, threefourths of whom are married. It is anticipated three thousand will apply for repatriation, together with probably 3,500 dependants. The estimated cost of transport was 300,000. It was suggested that repatriation be spread over twelve months to avoid congesting the Australian labour market. A DENIAL. (Received This Day at 8.40 a.m.) COPENHAGEN, Nov. 26 The Berlin Government contradicts a report from New York, that United States is granting Germany four hundred million dollars credit for foodstuffs, and raw material. AVALANCHE ON MT. BLANC. (Received This Day at 8.40 a.m.) } . . PARIS, Nov. 26. The top of Calcaire Pyramid, which is the summit of Mont Blanc, became detached, causing a formidable avalanche. Huge masses of rocks have now swept down Brenta Glacier, carrying away the fir forests. They then plunged into Dpire Valley stopping on the outskirts of Oredupoutoud, an Italian township. There were no personal injuries.
