ARMED MOTOR SMUGGLERS.

LILLE, Sept. 27. Investigations by French Customs officers show that, owing to the increased price of tobacco in France, smuggling fiom Belgium has flourished since .the armistice more than ever before. It is suspected that many tobacco runners who use heavy armoured Army motor lorries and employ armed guards to force a passage, have a sound financial backing. One association is said to have a capital of more than £IOO,OOO. It is estimated that each trip across the frontier brings in £4OO. The smugglers pass chiefly near Hazehrouck, Valenciennes, and Roubaix, but the authorities believe that a large depot for smuggled tobacco exists near St Quentin. During the last few months main roads have been fitted with stout swing gates and railway crossings have wire cables reinforced with spikes, hut the smugglers use side roads.
