The greatness and power of the Roman Empire were based upon its wonderful system of roads, which were built regardless of labor and expense. The greatness and power of the United States are based upon their magnificent railway systems, the mileage of which is far greater than that possessed by the whole continent of Europe, and far greater than that of the entire British Empire.
