. WESTLAND COMMITTEE. j TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16. I The quarterly meeting of the Committee of the League was held at the County Chambers at 7.40 o’clock. Present:—Messrs R. Wild (Chairman), P. R. Stewart, J. J. Breeze, D. J. Evans, W. E. Richards, T. Carley, J. Rogue, J. J. Mclntosh, A. Aitken, T. W. Bruce and Pilkingion (Secretary). Apologies wero made for the absence of Messrs Ritchie, Jeffries and Butler. The minutes of the previous meeting were pond a,lid confirmed, and the outward correspondence was approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From T. E. Y. fieddon, M.P., acknowledging letters from League and stating his willingness to co-operate in urging matters which had been duly represented.—Received. i From Minister of Murine noting the representations made regarding Bruce • Ray Landing.—Received. | From Prime Minister replying that the. League’s letter regarding the ap- ! pointments of Government inspectors i had been noted.—Received. From "Westland County Council furnishing particulars of road machinery loan proposals.—Received. From Westland Chamber of Commerce, asking support of League in urgent representations to the Government regarding bridges on main south road.—Received. From Canterbury Progress League with regard to action on the Public Works Estimates, and suggesting the appointment of Mr M. Fitzgerald as League’s representative at Otira to report regarding tunnel matters.— Received and npprovccL From local Sawmillchs’ meeting pointing out the insufficiency of the timber stacking -accommodation at Hokitika for railway export, and urging support of representations to the Government on the matter.—Received and resolved to invite the General Manager of Railways to visit Hokitika and go into several matters affecting railway aCcfjinmodation which 'required urgent attention. GENERAL. * It was resolved to enquire from the Minister of Public Works what action had been taken regarding the acceptance of a tender for Wait ah a. Bridge; also to urge that tenders he called for Tuttle Wanganui and Waitangi river bridges. On the motion of Mr Mclntosh seconded by Mr Logue it was agree i to ask the Ross Borough Council to .have the lower road across Ross Flat reopened for Vehicle traffic. In regard to shipping matters, the Chairman mentioned the difficulty at tlie moment in securing a steamer for the local trade. He approved of the remarks passed in the press recently about an effort to secure boats for a local export timber trade. Mr Breeze referred to the recent harbor legislation, and Messrs Butler. Logue, and Carley were appointed a sub-committee to watch local interests on behalf of the League. It was resolved to invite tho Resident Engineer (Mr Gillies) to meet members of the League at the first favorable opportunity to discuss tli'c question of the expenditure of roads and bridge votes in Westland, particularly affecting the smaller bridges on the Christchurch and Alain South roads. There was a short discussion regarding a site for suitable aviation landing in the vicinity of Hokitika, and at Mr Bruce’s suggestion members wsro asked to report on possible sites for future consideration. Accounts to the amount of £32 17/were passed'for payment,'and the meeling concluded at 9.30 p.m.
