PUKEWA MURDER

(I’EU CHESS ASSOCIATION. — 001* YRIGIIT. WELLINGTON, Nov. 15. Tho trial of Samuel John Tliorrie, charged with the murder of Sydney Eyre at. Pukekawn. oil August 24t1i., began at the Supreme Court this morning. Mr J E. Martin opened the case for tho Crown at length, urging as a motive for the crime that tho accused had a strong desire to possess the dead man’s wife, while his monetary position would probably bo considerably improved. Counsel commented iipdii Mrs Eyre’s movements and said he thought it had been proved coriclUsively that she was innocent. The only other person who would have a motive for the murder was tho prisoner. Mr Martin proceeded to outline tlie iliany facts adduced in evidence which ho contended pointed to Thorno as tlie criminal.
