HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE
MONDAY, NOVEMBER Bth. 'The Committee met at 7.30 p.m. Present:—Messrs W, 11., Shannon Chairman), si- cvenson, Aitken, Fodder-1 jen, Bruce, Lloyd,, Preston, Richards, Rev. Purchas and the Rector (Mr Brunton). The minutes confirmed and correspondence outward approved. INWARD CORRESPONDEN(-E. From Education Board Christchurch, notifying visit of Mr Brock to Hokitika. —Received. Mr Brock and Mr McCaskill waitedon the Committee to discuss the question of the application for the removal of the Dillninn’s School to Hokitika to relieve the present congestion in the fifth and sixth standard rooms. It was pointed out in the course of a general discussion that followed that there was ample floor space in the school as -• whole, but that there was an acknow-
ledged congestion in tho special class room referred to. It was resolved to apply to the Board for the removal of the Dillnians School to Hokitika, the Committee offering to find one third of the cost of t e removal subject to the report of the Board’s Overseer being of a favourable nature as to the condition and suitability. It was further resolved that application be made to the Board foi the present school to be remodelled with n view to the improvement of the ventilation of all the class rooms, which at present is far from satisfactory. A number of matters affecting the School were then discussed in an informal way. At the. conclusion a hearty vote ot thanks was passed to Messrs Brock, McCaskill and Bruntoii for their attendance and information.
' From Canterbury Boai-d notifying that as the average attendance at the. Secondary school had fallen to 44 for the past quarter, it had been found necessary under the regulations to give the assistant teacher, Miss G. M< Ait- ; ken notice of termination of her services 1 as from 31st. January.—Received, j From Miss Dixon, teacher South Spin notifying attendance averaged 16.1 out |of roll number of 18; stating the wood shed had been erected since last meeting and asking that necessary painting be carried out.—Received, j From Rector (Mr J. Brunton) reporting the average attendance for the month was primary 288; secondary 4G: a total of 334, out of roll number of : 320 and 47, a total of 308; the school j was at present being examined Lv Ini spector McCaskill; referring to nonpayment of boarding allowance; as he had been a recommended candid i f e for j Waimate High School he asked for i leave of absence for two weeks, and j that arrangements could bo male to ! carry on the work of the school during his absence. —Received; and leave agreed to. From Education Board agreeing to I pay to Messrs Keenan Bros., Rimu, 1/6 per return for carriage of scholars to Hokitika.—Received. Mr Preston moved that application be made to the High School Board for quarter’s .salary for tho Secretary. Seconded by Mr Richards and carried Mr Stevenson (Visiting Committee) reporting on a number of matters rb- ’ quiring attention that had not received ■ any attention since last meeting.—Ro--1 ceiv; It was resolved to make further application to the Board for new blackboards and the necessity of the fences receiving attention. Seconded by Mr Preston and Carried. Messrs Preston and Richards were appointed visitors for next month. Small accounts were passed for payment and the -Committee rose at 3.59 p.m.
