[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.] THEFTS FROM SHOP. AUCKLAND, November 6. The arrests were effected to-day of seven men and a woman on charges of theft and receiving stolen gods. The arrests are the result of police invostiga • tions following on a complaint from the proprietor of a clothing establishment that the goods had been missed from his shop. (Early investigations involved employees of a number of retail biUftimess establishments.. Three of the men arrested were employed in a. clothing establishment in Svmond St-., one in a hoot retailers in Queen St., and one a butchery at Kingland. I'lie woman is the wife of one of the men under arrest.
It is stated by the detectives that the charges are the result of the discovery of a widespread system of exchanging of stolen goods. Tlie accused appeared at the Police Court this morning, but were remanded till Friday.
THE NEW BONUS. AUCKLAND, Nov. 8> A telegram received by the Arbitration Court Registrar from the Registrar at Wellington, rends—Applications fo; new bonus should be received, but will not be heard by Court until next sitting at Auckland. In the meantime parties to awards should be served with a. copy of the application in the ordinary way, or notified of the same by advertisement, in accordance with the rule.

Taking as his brief a statement by the chairman of the Overseas Shipowners’ Committee regarding their running costs, Mr D. Jones put a question to Mr Massey. He asked if the Prime Minister realised that the prewar freight on a 601 b sheep was 3s 3d. It was now ! 10s 3J, or 318 per cent, rise. Lamb, formerly 2s Id now was 6s sd, an increase of 308 per cent, and 80001 b bullock carcases bore an increase of freight at the rate of 360 per cent, whereas the shipowners’ statement show ed that tlieir running costs had increased by 183 per cent., and P. and O. £IOO shares were recently sold at over £SOO, while to-day, despite the high price of coal and other costs, they were quoted at £430. MYSTERIOUS SHOOTING AFFAIR. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov 8. Yesterday morning Mrs F. Malaquin, a married woman, aged 20, was removed to the Christchurch Hospital, suffering from a bullet wound in the head. The matter was not reported to the. police until tho evening, and the woman’s condition to-night is reported to ho satisfactory, but the bullet has not yet been extricated. There is a good deal of mystery attaching to the affair. The husband stated the shooting was purely accidental, and says the explana. tion he gave to the police was accepted as satisfactory. Neighbours state that Mr and Mrs Malaquin lived very pilySATURDAY HALF HOLIDAY. INVERCARGILL, Nov. 8. At a public meeting to-night, it was decided to petition the Invercargill and South Invercargill Borough Councils to take a poll on a proposal that the weekly half holiday be observed on Saturday. SALVATION ARMY FINANCE. WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. The result of the Salvation Army’s annual self denial effort w’as announced to-night. Tho Dominion total is £57,000 9s 9d, an increase of £6,493,7s 4d on last year’s’figures. Following are this year’s totals for different divisions—Auckland £14,036 16s 7d; Central North £20,381 12s 6d; Wellington £5 879 Is 7d.; Christchurch £7,742 8s 3d; Dunedin £B,BIO 10s lOd. Every division shows an increase.
