THE COAL TROUBLE
l AUBTHALIAN & N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION] A RESUMPTION PROBABLE. LONDON, Oct. 31. It is confidently forecasted that a majority of the miners will favour a resumption. THOMAS TALKS TO MINERS. LONDON, Oct. 31. , Mr Thomas (Railway Secretary), speaking at Islington, made an earnest appeal for the acceptance by the miners , of the coal settlement terms. He said there were now reports from two big districts urging the rejection of the proposals. He believed the future democracy would be involved in the matter. If the leaders w'ere to be strength ened in negotiations, they must have full confidence of the men when dealing with the other side. There was much glib use of the phrase “Selling the Men.” There was too much of this phrase ,which was, he asserted usually a phrase of humbug. “If the present leaders are useless,” he said, “let the men elect a new set.” He had no hesitation in saying he would advise the leaders that the terms ought to be accepted this time.
