Two carters and shipping [foremen employed on the wharves were arrested and charged with being concerned in the theft of sugar from Chelsea Refin ery, between March 31st and June 30th, during which period forty tons were reported missing. The Colonial Sugar Company had offered a reward of £SOO for evillence leading to a conviction BODY FOUND. LEVIN, Nov 1. The body 0 f a man was found on Saturday on Hoko beach, apparently having been in the water for ten days. The description tallies with that of Eber Witkins who has been missing from Patea since Oct. 21st. MILL FLY WHEEL BREAKS. DAMAGE £13,000. TAUMARUNUI, October 31. Early on Saturday morning a serious accident, occurred at Ellis and Burnand’s mill, Manunui. . A big fly wheel off the engine broke' and was stripped to the hub. Fragments were thrown in all directions, everything in a line with the engine being razed to the ground. A smoke stack nearest the engine was struck and telescoped, and. another twin cylinder engine damaged. A piece of the travelled two hundred yards out; cut its way through a stack of timber and completely buried itself in the ground. Fortunately no one was injured. The accident will be disastrous to the. Company and the employees, as the engines are very difficult to replace, and it is feared that the men will be thrown out of work for some considerable time unless the main engine can be run on one cylinder.- The damage is estimated at £13,000. INCREASE IN COST OF LIVING CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 1. Justice Stringer ,at to-day’s sitting of the Arbitration Court stated he had received figures from the Government Statistician concerning the cost of living for the six months ending Sept. 30th. Without divulging the figures he would say t-lia-t these showed a further substantial increase in the cost of living. The Court would make a formal pronouncement later in the present session. The new bonus would date from Nov. Ist. A SUDDEN DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 1. While having tea at Shades’ Hotel last evening Frank Tomlinson, aged forty, a returned soldier, collapsed, and died immediately after.
